Vega Tubaphone Plectrum Banjo

1920s Vega plectrum banjo is widely considered by musicians and collectors to be one of the absolute pinnacles of the four-string jazz age.

Built in Boston, Massachusetts, during the height of the Dixieland and jazz boom, Vega’s plectrum banjos (which feature a long 26.75″ to 27″ scale length and 22 frets) are celebrated for their incredible volume, sweet sustain, and clarity.

A 1920s Vega plectrum banjo is highly sought after by traditional jazz guitarists and chord-melody players.

Core Specifications & Tuning The Plectrum Scale:

A plectrum banjo shares the exact neck proportions of a 5-string banjo but lacks the short 5th drone string. This longer scale gives it more “pizazz”, deeper bass resonance, and increased chord-melody sustain compared to its shorter sibling, the tenor banjo. Of recent Irish tenor banjo player have been on the lookout for quality plectrum banjos and using a capo on the 3rd fret to play like a tenor banjo.

Traditional Tuning: Standard tuning is CGBD (low to high). Alternative Tunings: Many modern flatpickers use “Chicago Tuning” (DGBE), matching the top four strings of a standard guitar, which makes it incredibly versatile for guitarists looking to double on banjo.

This banjo has the tubaphone tonering installed which is the gold standard. Known for pristine clarity and extreme projection.
